Music Emissions
Brian Rutherford reviews@musicemissions.com
www.musicemissions.com
The site has three main purposes, firstly to give independent artists exposure, secondly to give a foundation for journalism students to practice the art of critique, and finally to give indie music junkies great recommendations on new and upcoming music. Not only does the site serve as an independent voice for under appreciated music but it is also a launch pad for journalism students. Many have come and gone over the years. We now allow artists to create their own profile pages to give community members exposure to their music. The site's motto tends to sum it all up: Rate, Review, Recommend.

SECTION SEVEN: THIS MONTH'S ARTICLE

Negotiation Technique: Playing for the Door-How to Make Sure Everyone Pays

by Jeri Goldstein, Performingbiz.com
© 2013 All Rights Reserved. Used By Permission

Percentage gigs or playing for the door is often one way to break into a new market or play new venues. Your biggest challenge is to get accurate audience counts when a door person is collecting the money, rather than a box office. It's difficult for you to prepare for your show and keep tabs on the door. That is certainly true when it is a bar gig with multiple sets and people coming in throughout the night. The club or venue usually takes care of collecting the money with one of their employees, so whew you don't have to worry about that, or do you?

Yes, it's great that someone else is responsible, but the money collector doesn't work for you, they work for the venue. They have the venue's interests in mind and not necessarily yours. The money collector probably lives in town and may be familiar with a lot of the people who frequent the venue, whereas if you are a touring artist you may just be passing through.

So here are some problems to be aware of and some solutions to begin using on your very next percentage or door gig.

The Problems:

1. You neglect to discuss who collects and how the money is collected at the time you book the gig.

2. The money collector, if provided by the venue, may have friends that they let in for free. There goes some of your income.

3. They may only collect for the first part of the night and not the full night. This accounts for a bunch of lost income.

4. They may pocket some money, after all who would know, and only report a fraction of the real income to the club owner.

5. They may report all the money to the club owner, but the club owner may only report a fraction of the income to you.

Some Solutions:

1. Include a discussion of money collection in all of your negotiations. Let the booker know that you have some ideas to discuss with them, in a non-confrontational manner, regarding the money collecting process.

2. Buy a tally hand counter either manual or electronic, ranging from $6.-$16. They have them at office supply stores or many online outlets, just Google "tally hand counter."

3. If you have not negotiated providing your own money collector then, get your own door monitor whose job is to stand next to the money collector and click the hand counter each time a person pays, and makes sure that all of the people are paying. Most of your travel entourage probably has their responsibilities laid out for them, so you might want to tap some of the following folks for this job.

If you have a loyal friend, family member or fan in the town where you are playing, ask them to be your door monitor for the night or even to come to a number of local gigs in their area. You can offer to pay them with free tickets to the show, in CDs, in merchandise or even with an hourly wage. Believe me; they are worth their weight in gold! The difference you will see in your income will astound you. They can confirm that those on your comp list are the only one's let in for free. The counter numbers can confirm the exact number of paid people when you settle your money for the night.

Ask to meet the money collector before the gig starts, introduce them to your counter person/door monitor so there are no questions, control issues or weirdness when people start coming in. They are now officially on notice that you are in charge and watching out for your business.

4. Make sure the money collector is collecting money at the door until one-half hour before the end of your last set. If you want to collect a lower ticket fee for the last set of the night, that should have been negotiated when you booked the date. Most venues stop collecting money much earlier in the night, resulting in less income for you. These four steps, when done consistently, will increase your income on those playing-for-the-door gigs. Try it on your next percentage gig and track the results for yourself.

After 20 years of working as an agent and manager, Jeri Goldstein authored the award-winning book, "How To Be Your Own Booking Agent: A Performing Artist's Guide To A Successful Touring Career."

The preceding article is Biz Booster #57 from Jeri's NEW BOOK "The Tiny Guide to Huge Success: 100 Biz Boosting Hot Tips to Ignite Your Performing Career."

Each Hot Tip is purposefully concise and actionable to provide a simple to execute step-by-step process toward creating a professional and successful career as a musician or performing artist. Each Biz Booster helps to develop a piece of an artist's career. Taken together, they offer tested strategies of how to design a performing career that works, that is professional and that is profitable. More more information please visit www.performingbiz.com
